Bauhaus cinese e Alpenliebe offerte agli dei

This newsletter opens with China because I was recently invited by a Beijing gallery to do a solo exhibition and some presentations in the city, in the 798 Art District (the former Bauhaus district of museums and galleries), and here I am, excited and inspirated.
In between presentations, the UM Gallery entourage brought us around the city to show us - in addition to the must-see sights - some places we would hardly have known about as tourists, and I cannot thank them enough for that.

Oone of the places that most made me fall in love is the White Cloud Temple, one of the largest and oldest Taoist temples in China, as well as the headquarters of the Chinese Taoist Association.
It is a popular place of worship for pilgrims, but far from the masses of tourists, a factor that gives it an aura of peace and mystical silence.

It is in the White Cloud Temple that I can claim to have literally eaten the 'food of the gods'.
It is common to make food offerings to the deities: the relationship between creature and creator is in fact developed through symbolic mediations, and food constitutes a powerful religious paradigm.
Offerings are placed under statues of deities, including animal ones.
Here we encountered a statue depicting a donkey, venerated because it was historically the mount of the Taoist immortals, to which Alpenliebe sweets had been offered; the magic of this practice lies in the ordinary, in the everyday: there is no need to cook solemn food; spirituality is humble and permeates everything, and even a fistful of sweets retrieved from a pocket is a welcome gift, if given from the heart.
I then discovered that the food placed under the statues should never be wasted, but should be distributed to those in need; so when our friend had low blood sugar due to the scorching heat and approached the altar to ask for a glass of water, the monks handed her the candies of the equestrian deity, because the help of the divine can also pass through the Alpenliebe.
Since it was a generous amount of candy, I also benefited, feeling very fortunate to have had access to a - in that context - sacred food.

The other magical destination of the trip, which could not be missed, was the Great Wall of China.
We were based in Beijing, and after about an hour and a half's drive we reached the village of Xiangshuihu, the wall area closest to the city, belonging to the Ming dynasty and, due to its primordial appearance, a favourite destination for adventurous hikers.

As soon as we arrive at the beginning of the path, two guards tell us that it is not possible to climb from that point that day because a lingdao (local governor) is visiting, so we have to turn back.
The guy who accompanies us does not give up and tells us that we can try to climb to the top by another route; we then head into the woods in search of a path he remembers having taken several times as a boy. At first it seems OK, but soon we realise that that path probably hasn't existed for a while, and we find ourselves climbing off the track, with the only certainty that if we kept climbing we would sooner or later cross the wall. I won't hide the fact that there were moments when I wasn't very relaxed: even though I am quite used to walking in the mountains, the task wasn't the easiest; several points were very steep and could only be tackled by clinging on from tree to tree to continue, many areas had friable ground, so there were quite a few falls (although never very dangerous, fortunately there were no ravines or overhangs).
For me, lacking a sense of direction, it was a bit destabilising, because I had no idea where I was, all I could see around me were trees, and I couldn't get the image of Di Caprio sheltering inside a horse carcass in The Revenant out of my head.

After a couple of hours (and a few swearings) we finally arrive here, the nervousness of the rocky climb dissipates and we enjoy the hypnotic atmosphere of the mountains and the extraordinary human work.

We walked along a good stretch of abandoned wall, many parts were collapsed and almost unusable, we had to do a bit of gymkhana to continue, but the beauty of what we walked through was worth all the effort.
To close this trip report, I leave you with a video excerpt of the surreal concert that took place at the end of the exhibition:
